DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — The Georgia Bureau of Investigations (GBI) is on the scene after officers fatally shot a man during a pursuit in DeKalb County Wednesday morning.
According to the DeKalb County Police Department, officers responded to reports of a person being shot near Pine Mountain Road around 4:15 a.m. When they arrived, officers said they found a car near Covington Highway they believed to be involved with the initial shooting.
The driver then fled and crashed near Lithonia Industrial Boulevard off I-20 at exit 74, DeKalb Police said. Police said he then got out of the car and ran away. During the brief chase, police said the driver pointed a weapon at the officers and the officers responded with gunfire -- fatally shooting the man. Police did not say what weapon he pointed at officers or what, if any, other methods were used before deadly force.
Authorities said they also found a person suffering from gunshot wounds inside of the man's car. They were taken to a local hospital.
The officers were not injured during the incident, officials said.
According to a tweet, the DeKalb County Police Department requested the GBI to lead the investigation. The GBI said they are working to gather more details.
