TROUP COUNTY, Ga. — Authorities in Troup County said they are looking for someone who broke into a safe inside a home at some point over the Memorial Day holiday.
According to a release from Sgt. Stewart Smith, Troup County Sheriff's deputies were summoned to the home in the 2500 block of Mobley Bridge Road on Tuesday.
When they arrived, the resident told deputies that one or more persons had forced their way into the home through a window at some point between Sunday and Tuesday.
Smith said that the resident had observed that a large Liberty brand safe on the floor of the residence had what appeared to be burn marks on it and was partially opened.
When examining the safe, investigators said it appeared the suspect or suspects used some sort of cutting torch to gain access. Inside the safe was several thousand dollars in US currency.
According to Smith, at this point, investigators believe the suspect or suspects left the home with a large amount of cash -- mostly in $20 and $100 bills. Due to the fact that a cutting torch was used on the safe, investigators said it is possible that some of the bills may appear to be burned or have char marks on them.
Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact the Troup County Criminal Investigation Division at 706-883-1616 or Crime Stoppers at 706-812-1000.
