21-year-old, 17-year-old killed after shooting in the basement of DeKalb home, 2 arrested: officials

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A 21-year-old and a 17-year-old are dead after a shooting in the basement of a DeKalb home on Monday night, according to the police department and the medical examiner's office.

Authorities responded to the 3900 block of Emerald Lake Drive. The neighborhood is located off Snapfinger Road and not far from Canby Lane Elementary School. 

When officers arrived, they found two men, a 21-year-old and a 17-year-old, in the basement of the home with gunshot wounds. Both were taken to the hospital, but one of the men died due to his injuries before arriving at the hospital, and the other man died at the hospital, the police department said. 

Investigators were able to identify suspects in connection with the shooting and tracked them to Rockey Valley Drive. 

When officers arrived, they took one suspect into custody without incident. Investigators said he was still wearing the same clothes from the shooting scene. 

Additionally, DeKalb Police said they took a second suspect into custody nearby without incident. Both suspects were taken to the DeKalb County Jail. 

The DeKalb County Medical Examiner's Office identified the victims as 21-year-old Broderick Shovely and 17-year-old  Santino Shovely.
