DUNWOODY, Ga. — Editor's Note: This story has been updated to include the suspect's charges.
Dunwoody Police reported a shooting involving an officer in Brookhaven early Wednesday morning.
Sgt. Michael Cheek with Dunwoody PD confirmed that officers shot at a suspect that, he said, "produced a gun" at officers during a foot chase that followed a car chase. It was initially unclear if the suspect fired that gun, with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation later saying he had.
The individual was taken to the hospital for his injuries and the GBI later said he was in stable condition. The bureau said he was hit "several times." In a Nov. 7 update, Dunwoody Police said the suspect is still at the hospital, but once he is released he will be taken to the DeKalb County Jail.
Dunwoody Police also included in their Nov. 7 update charges the suspect faces. He is facing charges of four counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, gun possession, felony fleeing and eluding, theft by receiving a motor vehicle, cocaine possession and marijuana possession.
A huge police presence descended on Ashford Dunwoody Road in Brookhaven, which remained closed into the afternoon between Johnson Ferry Road and Peachtree Road before reopening.
The GBI said the car chase started at a gas station near Perimeter Mall in Dunwoody when officers identified a stolen car. Sgt. Cheek with DPD said as patrol cars approached, the allegedly stolen car rammed the police vehicles and drove off, with a chase then spanning Ashford Dunwoody Road into Brookhaven.
Police said the chase ended with a crash along Ashford Dunwoody Road, before the suspect fled toward the residential area of Ashford Club Court. The shooting occurred in that area when the gun was allegedly produced at officers. No officers were injured, police said.
Sgt. Cheek confirmed the red car in the photos below was the car involved.
11Alive SkyTracker flew over the scene and observed numerous police vehicles as well as fire trucks and ambulances that had responded.
No Brookhaven officers were involved except for in responding after the shooting occurred in their jurisdiction, Dunwoody PD reported.
In the Nov. 7 update, Dunwoody Police also added that the GBI investigation and the department's internal investigation into the officer's actions are still active.
