Suspect accused in deadly Mother's Day shooting at Buckhead Elleven45 Lounge indicted

A grand jury formally indicted Karanji Reese on 19 counts on Thursday.

ATLANTA — A Fulton County grand jury has indicted the suspect accused of shooting and killing two at the shuttered Buckhead Elleven45 Lounge on Mother's Day.

It comes after a judge declared the nightclub lounge a public nuisance and shut it down.

Karani Reese was formally indicted on Thursday on a total of 19 charges, including murder, felony murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

Reese is accused of killing Mari Creighton and Nykris Ridley and injuring four others.

Surveillance video from the night of the shooting inside the club was previously shown in court. The video showed the moments before the shooting where one of the victims, Ridley, appeared to throw a punch at the suspect, according to Francis' testimony. It also showed the moments when the shots were fired, and devastation hit.

"What I can share with you today is that my heart aches every single waking second of the day imagining what my baby must have gone through as she lay there alone, helpless during the final moments of her life before she took her last breath," said Creighton's mother, Tracey Eason, previously said in court.

Reese turned himself in early June, weeks after the shooting.

Reese's family previously maintained his innocence shortly after his arrest and during his bond and preliminary court hearings.

"It’s very terrible. APD needs to do their job instead of going by hearsay from the streets because Karanji did not do that. He’s innocent," the family member previously said outside the courthouse.

She later described Reese as a laid-back and fun-loving guy.

"He’s not aggressive. He’s not that type of person," she said. "They just trying to put it on him because of what they’re hearing in the street. They need to do their job and find the real shooter."

It's unclear when Reese's next court hearing will be.
