COVINGTON, Ga. -- One young woman said she’s sure she will wake up and this will all have been a nightmare.
Disbelief, shock, and tears in the cold for Alyssa Wright as the girl’s mother, Melinda, received the embrace of a community grieving with her at a vigil outside Alcovy High School Friday night.
No one is able to explain any of it – 19-year-old Alyssa Wright was strangled Tuesday, and investigators say it was her boyfriend, Elijah Ramoutar, 19, who killed her, at the home of his parents.
But what happened between them?
“That’s still what I’m waiting on. I have no answers,” Melinda Wright said.
Alyssa’s Facebook is filled with photos of her and her boyfriend. Her mother said they started seeing each other in January. She said he doted on Alyssa and there was no sign of any trouble.
Alyssa graduated from Alcovy High School in May. She was preparing to go to school to become a nurse.
“She had so much to live for,” her Aunt Tina said. “And this was such a senseless crime”
Alyssa’s is a face many will miss in her family and in the community.
“She was such a joy to be around. She was always smiling, always laughing,” her Aunt Phyllis said.
The family is grateful for the support of so many who loved Alyssa and contributing money for funeral expenses here on a GoFundMe page.
“It tells me what I already knew, how wonderful my baby girl was,” her mother said. “Still remember her, how she was, that beautiful smile.”
All the while, she said she is praying for Elijah Ramoutar and his famiy.
Investigators have not released any details about Ramoutar or whether he’s cooperating or making any statements – details that might give Alyssa’s family some answers about how this happened, and why.
