Former Atlanta councilmember, mayoral candidate pleads guilty to fraud charge

Antonio Brown initially pled not guilty in July of 2020 after he was indicted on several charges including wire, mail and bank fraud.

ATLANTA — Former Atlanta city councilmember Antonio Brown is now pleading guilty in a federal case involving fraud.

Brown initially pled not guilty in July 2020 after he was indicted on several charges, including wire fraud, mail fraud, bank fraud and making false statements on a bank loan application.

In May of 2021, Brown filed a motion to suppress the statements he made to federal investigators when he was indicted.

Brown claimed he was not read his Miranda rights and was tricked into an interrogation by federal investigators. His motion was denied after investigators said Brown wasn’t in custody and wasn’t entitled to the Miranda warnings.

The former city councilman pleaded guilty to one count of bank fraud, federal court records show. In the original indictment, prosecutors alleged on this count that Brown had filed a loan application "containing materially false information about his income and assets."

In addition to the guilty plea, Brown is entering a plea agreement. Defendants will typically enter plea deals to receive a more lenient sentence.

His sentencing is scheduled for April 13, 2023.
