ATLANTA — A Fulton County man is behind bars after allegedly fatally hitting a pedestrian while driving drunk and then fleeing the scene last week, according to warrants obtained from the Magistrate Court of Fulton County.
Warrants show that on the night of Jan. 16, Carl Gilmore, 50, was driving a 2021 Dodge Challenger on Campbellton Road when he improperly changed lanes and struck a 2020 Kia Optima. Gilmore continued driving at a high speed onto Venetian Drive, lost control of his vehicle, and struck a pedestrian, Corey Jarrells, in the road. Jarrells was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the warrants. Family members said the 45-year-old was walking from a friend's home when he was killed.
Authorities said Gilmore continued driving and then hit a utility pole and fence, flipping the car onto its side. He attempted to run away from the scene and was arrested by Atlanta Police shortly after, the warrants indicated. He was transported to the hospital with injuries to both of his hands. Officers reportedly smelled alcohol on Gilmore's breath while at the hospital, according to warrants.
Records show Gilmore was booked into the Fulton County Jail on Jan. 18. He faces several charges, including homicide by vehicle, driving under the influence, hit and run, and reckless driving.
The family of Corey Jarrells has started an online fundraiser to help with funeral arrangements. His brother, Braylon D. Brown, told 11Alive the loss has left his family speechless.
"I constantly wish it was a dream. It's going to take some time getting used to my brother not being here. He always looked out for me ever since I was a little kid, who always protected me from harms way, and when I became old enough to protect myself, he still continued to have my back," he said. "It hurts the most that I will never physically get to see my brother again. My brother was also a very gifted self-taught cook and shared his gifts among his friends and family. This is not only a loss to our mom and I, but also a whole community who loved him."
