A suspect who allegedly fired a gun at Crisp County deputies was injured during a deputy-involved shooting after a chase on a major interstate.
The incident took place on the interstate in the middle of the day in Turner County on Monday.
The suspect, 42-year-old Joyce Marie Lewis-Pelzer, is in the hospital. No officers were hurt during the pursuit.
GBI said Lewis-Pelzer was reportedly involved in a homicide Monday morning in Conyers. Conyers Police were looking for her in connection with the crime and had issued a description of her vehicle, notifying law enforcement agencies along I-75. They believed she could have been heading towards Florida.
Around 3:15 p.m., a Georgia state trooper spotted the suspect's vehicle on I-75 South in Crisp County near mile marker 95. The trooper and two deputies tried to conduct a traffic stop, but GBI said Lewis-Pelzer kept going.
GSP tried to stop her with a PIT maneuver, but Lewis-Pelzer was able to recover from the skid continued along the interstate, GBI said. The GSP trooper tried it again in Turner County near mile marker 85. The trooper was able to stop the vehicle.
GBI said two Crisp County deputies approached the vehicle and at least one shot was fired at the deputies from inside Lewis-Pelzer’s vehicle. The two deputies returned fire, striking her. One of the deputies on scene rendered aid until EMS arrived.
She was airlifted to Cordele, Georgia and then was later transported by ambulance to a hospital in Macon.
At last check, GBI said Lewis-Pelzer was listed in serious but stable condition. The investigation is ongoing.
