COVINGTON, Ga. — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) and the Newton County Sheriff's Office are investigating after a person was fatally shot in Covington on Monday afternoon.
The shooting occurred just before 1 p.m. at the Almon/Crowell Roads exit near a vape shop, according to a release.
There are limited details, but it appears to be a drive-by shooting based on the suspect's charges.
Deputies said one person, 27-year-old Treyviyon Mason, was shot in the incident. Mason was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.
It's unclear what led to the shooting.
The suspect, 32-year-old Elan Shabazz, who is accused of leaving the scene, has since been located and taken into custody. Shabazz is charged with murder, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, tampering with evidence, drive-by shooting and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
The shooting is currently under investigation by both the GBI and the Newton County Sheriff's Office.
Authorities said more charges are also forthcoming.
