DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A 59-year-old man is dead after a shooting involving police overnight at the Quality Inn just off I-85 in Chamblee, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
The GBI said shortly before 5 p.m. on Tuesday, investigators with the Lawrenceville Police Department learned that the man, who was identified as Terrell Hoggro, 59, was wanted on numerous felony arrest warrants in connection to armed robberies.
DeKalb County dispatch said they responded to a "person shot" call at the hotel just before 11 p.m.
11Alive crews saw crime scene tape surrounding the hotel. 11Alive also spoke to a witness on the scene who stated that officers told her to remain inside her hotel room for over an hour.
According to a preliminary investigation, investigators were conducting surveillance and coordinating additional resources to arrest Hoggro-- when he came out of his hotel room.
That's when the GBI said investigators attempted to arrest Hoggro, and he pulled a handgun from his waistband and raised it as officers approached.
According to the GBI, a Lawrenceville Police officer shot Hoggro. Officers gave him medical treatment until EMS arrived, and he was taken to the hospital, where the 59-year-old was pronounced dead, the GBI said.
No officers were hurt during the shooting, authorities added.
Hoggro's body will be taken to the DeKalb County Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.
The GBI is conducting an independent investigation and then will turn its findings over to the Dekalb County District Attorney’s Office for review.
