COLLEGE PARK, Ga. — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating a shooting where its agents said an off-duty Atlanta police officer shot and killed a man Monday.

According to the Atlanta Police Department, the off-duty officer --  Melvin Potter -- has been relieved of duty following the incident.

According to a GBI news release, at about 1 a.m., Potter was at a bar along Old National Highway with two other people. As he left, he escorted someone to their car when an argument occurred between him and another group of people.

Things escalated, and Potter shot 38-year-old Devon Anderson, according to the GBI.  Anderson was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead. His body was taken to the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.

"After learning of the incident, the decision was made to relieve Melvin Potter of duty," APD said in a statement.

The City of South Fulton Police Department arrested and charged Potter with obstruction. The GBI has since taken over the investigation at the request of CSFPD.

The GBI investigation is active and ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the GBI Regional Investigative Office in Atlanta at 770-388-5019.
