Georgia detention deputy charged with child molestation and aggravated sodomy, sheriff says

The detention deputy was immediately fired, the sheriff said.

HARALSON COUNTY, Ga. — A Haralson County detention deputy has been arrested and charged with several child sex crimes.

Sheriff Stacy Williams said in a release on Tuesday that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation contacted the department about an ongoing investigation of Detention Deputy Thomas Roberts in an outside jurisdiction.

Roberts was arrested and charged with child molestation, aggravated sodomy and incest. He was immediately fired, the sheriff said. He had been a detention deputy with the Haralson County Sheriff's Office for more than a year.

“I have stood for transparency from the day I took office. I know that the GBI has conducted a careful investigation into this case,” Sheriff Williams said. “Once we knew the results of the investigation and the atrociousness of the charges, we promptly made the decision to dismiss the former deputy as well as make sure we were transparent to the citizens of Haralson County about this investigation and arrest.”

The GBI is handling the investigation.
