LITHONIA, Ga. — A grandfather was shot and killed by his grandson after a dispute escalated to gunfire inside of a DeKalb County home Sunday evening, police said.
Police said the shooting happened at a home in Lithonia along Dean Court. A 34-year-old man is now in custody after Sgt. Jedidia Hazlewood said he killed his 77-year-old grandfather with a rifle during a dispute around 6 p.m.
When officers got to the home, they found the elderly man dead inside the home. Police said they do not know what the incident was about that led to the man's death.
"The Lithonia Police Department expresses its deepest condolences to the victim's family. This is a truly heartbreaking event, and our thoughts are with the affected loved ones during this difficult time," a police statement said. "The suspect was taken into custody at the scene without further incident, and the investigation is ongoing to shed light on the circumstances surrounding this incident. The Lithonia Police Department remains dedicated to conducting a thorough investigation into this tragic event. As the investigation progresses, further details will be made available to the public and the media."
A neighbor told 11Alive this is the third shooting they've had on this street in just the last few months.
