Group attempts 'for months' to have local horses rescued

For months now, a group says it has been trying to get something done about a property housing dead and emaciated horses.

A Fulton County man is out on bond after being charged with animal cruelty.

11Alive spoke with one of many neighbors who have been part of a huge ongoing email chain.

For months now, the group has been trying to get something done about this property and those animals.

"After this, no one should let him own any horses anymore," one neighbor said.

She was referring to 35-year-old Brandon Fulton who appeared in court Wednesday accused of animal cruelty.

Tuesday, Fulton County Animal Control officers came to the property on Butner Road near Camp Creek Parkway and found four dead horses there - one partially burned. Another was still tethered to a tree.

Neighors said they complained for months about the animals.

"The horses are in the middle of the road," one neighbor said. "And Butner and Camp Creek is a very dangerous intersection - people get in bad accidents. And when I come home, there's a horse in the road - it's damage."

This neighbor didn't want to appear on camera - in part because of a warning sign Fulton recently placed at the front of his property.

"It's just a piece of plywood with red paint that says if you come in he's shoot you in the head," the neighbor said. "I could see a no trespassing sign but that's a little aggressive and very extreme."

It turns out Brandon Fulton owns just over 23 acres there but code enforcement officers testified they've cited him for a number of violations such as improper building of sheds, trash and debris.

In the meantime, rescue groups have removed eight surviving horses - several emaciated and running loose.

"That's very sad," the neighbor said. "I'm an animal lover and that was my issue in the first place is the horses could run into someone - or the horses could die."

In fact, while the judge granted bond, he ordered Fulton not be allowed to have any more horses.
