Gwinnett Police arrest suspect for several driving charges and fleeing with child in the car

The suspect received multiple charges for reckless behavior while driving and more.

DULUTH, Ga. — A 21-year-old man was arrested on several charges after refusing to stop a traffic checkpoint set up by the Gwinnett County Police Department while having a young child in the car.

It was around 1 a.m. on June 14 when officers reported seeing a black BMW speeding down Interstate 85. An officer tried to pull over the car, but they kept speeding away. Not long after, police said the department's aviation units had tracked down the car after it exited off Pleasant Hill Road with its headlights off.

The car was found in a Duluth neighborhood where police said they could see the driver with a 2-year-old child. Officers were able to surround the area and arrest the driver.

He was taken to the Gwinnett County Jail and charged with felony fleeing and eluding, reckless driving, speeding, unsafe lane change, driving without headlights, defective tires, operating unsafe vehicle, failure to obey traffic control device, child restraint violation and duty upon striking fixture.

Police added that the child was not hurt and is in the custody of a family member. No other information was released about the incident, including the relationship between the child and the driver.

Gwinnett County police said that during their five-day racing, reckless driving and DUI checkpoint or detail targeting, officers pulled over 485 cars and issued 658 citations, including 36 for DUI and 10 for reckless driving.
