WOODSTOCK, Ga. — A man is now in custody and is facing multiple charges after police responded to an hours-long hostage situation at the Alta Ridgewalk Apartments in Woodstock early Monday morning.
In an afternoon update, Woodstock Police said they received a call from a woman stating that her boyfriend was armed with a gun and holding her inside their apartment.
According to police, the situation happened near the outlet mall off I-575, in the area of Brandon Street and Ridge Trail. The situation happened from about 1 a.m. until 9:30 a.m., holding up traffic and restricting access to the area.
In addition, neighbors who spoke to 11Alive described hearing noises starting around 1 a.m. on Monday before looking outside to notice officials in SWAT gear. An ambulance and a tactile vehicle were also seen at the complex.
The suspect refused to speak with negotiators, leading SWAT members to enter the apartment.
Officers stated there was no active threat to the public and that no one was hurt in the incident.
11Alive's Skytracker flew over the scene, where officers with Woodstock Police and members of the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office were spotted.
One resident 11Alive spoke with described the shock of seeing officers swarm the complex over the course of the morning.
"As a parent, it's very frightening. I'm glad to see there were no children involved in the situation," he added.
The whole situation came to an end around 9:30 a.m.
“The Woodstock Police Department acted quickly and decisively to resolve this volatile situation,” stated Woodstock Police Chief Robert Jones. “Working with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, we were able to expediently bring this to a peaceful end.”
Police said the suspect is being charged with kidnapping, aggravated assault and false imprisonment.
