GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A several-hour SWAT standoff is now over at a home in Gwinnett County following a deadly shooting, but police said they did not find the suspect inside the house.
One person was shot and killed during a domestic dispute and the suspect was inside the home when police arrived, Gwinnett County Police Investigator Christian D'Allaird said.
Police confirmed the standoff had been resolved, but said when they entered the home the suspect was no longer there. Detectives are continuing to follow up on leads for where they could have gone.
D'Allaird said officers responded to a person shot call at a home in Grayson just after noon. After they got there, they learned that one person was dead and the alleged shooter was holed up inside the home.
There were more than 20 units on scene in a neighborhood along Roseberry Lane, which blocked the street for hours. Police said the standoff was near Trip Elementary School.
"We believe that the suspect is still inside the home and has refused to come out," D'Allaird said.
SWAT had been at the home since roughly 4 p.m. as they attempted to negotiate with the suspect inside the house.
Neighbor Kevin Self was picking up some groceries for a family Father's Day barbecue when his son rang him.
"Police started rolling in," Self said. "He called me and said 'Hey, there's a SWAT van that just rolled by. So, something heavy is going on in the neighborhood.'"
Neighbors shared video of the SWAT Team using K-9s and robots around the home. Some of their security cameras even caught the gunshots going off.
"I've never seen anything like this. Never. I didn't even know Gwinnett County had this many people working on a Father's Day," Self said.
The CSI remained on scene once officers cleared. And as investigators try to make sense of what happened, Self tried to make the best of his Father's Day.
"It's a pretty terrible thing, really. I mean, I can't imagine what they're...whoever got shot, what their family's going through," he said. "The guy who did the shooting -- you know, he's probably somebody's son, dad, brother."
