DECATUR, Ga. - With their children nearby, a mother of four was shot and killed by her husband Friday night, DeKalb County police said.

Officers responded to the Hidden Villas Apartment Complex located at 2929 Panthersville Road around 11:30 p.m. and found 38-year-old Angela Bishop's lifeless body inside of a gold Toyota Camry.

An officer on scene said that Bishop's husband, 42-year-old James Beard admitted he shot his wife.

Beard told another officer he was in his apartment when he heard a loud banging at the door. When he looked through the peephole he didn't see anyone. He also told police someone was blocking the peephole and standing in an area where he couldn't see them. Beard said he opened the door and the gun "went off," then tossed the Beretta .40 caliber handgun behind the apartment building. Police recovered the weapon.

The children told police their mother told them to stay in the car while she went to see if their dad was home. The next time they saw their mom, she was being carried to the car by their dad, the children said.

Beard was arrested and charged with murder.

Dekalb Family and Children Services were contacted. Police said the children were turned over to a relative who lives in Grayson until their grandparents from South Carolina arrive to pick them up.
