LAGRANGE, Ga. — Police say an inmate at a transitional facility in LaGrange has been arrested for allegedly downloading and possessing child pornography.
At about 12 p.m. on Tuesday, a detective with the GBI's Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force received information from another member of the task force, that Charles Ray Dye, Jr., a Department of Corrections inmate being housed at the LaGrange Transitional Center, may have downloaded and be in possession of child pornography.
With the cooperation of the Georgia Department of Corrections, the LaGrange Police Department immediately made contact with Dye and determined that he had a cellphone - which was lawful, given his status at the transitional facility, police said.
However, when authorities reviewed his phone, they determined that "numerous still photos and videos" were in a "secured application" on the device, police said.
According to police, the photos and videos on the phone depicted various children under the age of 16 engaged in sexual acts.
Police said they arrested Dye for violation of the Computer or Electronic Pornography and Child Exploitation Act of 2007, with other charges likely to follow.
Dye was transferred from the transitional facility to a more secure location within the Georgia Department of Corrections, authorities said.
