Inmate stabbed at Fulton County Jail, sheriff's office says

Deputies said the inmate was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

ATLANTA — An inmate has been stabbed at the Fulton County Jail,  according to the sheriff's office.

The stabbing prompted a heavy police response at the Rice Street jail on Tuesday afternoon.

Deputies said the inmate was taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The identity of the inmate has not yet been released.

It's unclear what led up to the incident at this time.

The stabbing comes less than a week after the Georgia Senate subcommittee reported its findings from a long-running investigation into conditions at the jail. The investigation was launched last year after a series of deaths occurred at the Fulton County Jail.

The most recent violent incident at the jail occurred in April when 37-year-old Leonard Fortner died after being stabbed multiple times by an inmate.
