Teen indicted in 16-year-old's shooting death at DeKalb IHOP, DA says

A grand jury indicted Jakari Childs, 17, on Tuesday on murder and multiple other charges, according to the district attorney's office.

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A 17-year-old has been indicted in the death of a DeKalb County teen who was shot and killed while on the job at an IHOP earlier this year.

A grand jury indicted Jakari Childs, 17, on Tuesday on murder and multiple other charges, according to the district attorney's office.

The deadly shooting that took Jacob Johnson's life happened on July 15 at the IHOP on Panola Road. The district attorney's office said that Childs showed up at the restaurant looking for his ex-girlfriend who allegedly worked there.

Johnson was best friends with the young woman and all three of them went to the same school, the office said.

Childs' ex-girlfriend then went outside to look for him to ask him to leave. That's when Childs allegedly fired the deadly shot, killing Johnson.

Johnson's mother, Tiya Morgan, previously said she doesn't want people to remember her son for how his life was taken - she wants people to know the sweet hard-working boy she raised.

“They didn’t just rob him, they robbed the world of my child," Morgan previously said.

She also said he loved roller skating, had big dreams and wanted to be a lawyer someday.

Childs is charged with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

The district attorney's office said Childs will be arraigned on Dec. 13.
