14-year-old turns himself in after 4 students hurt in Benjamin E. Mays High School parking lot shooting, APS says

The suspect turned himself in to the Atlanta Police Department.

ATLANTA — A young suspect wanted in connection with a shooting in an Atlanta high school parking lot that left four students injured on Valentine's Day is now in custody, authorities said.

The 14-year-old student, who Atlanta Public Schools said is a suspect, turned himself in to the Atlanta Police Department Wednesday morning. APD said his name was not released because he is a minor.

School officials said the teen is charged with four counts of aggravated assault, one count of possession of a firearm by a minor and one count of possession of a firearm on school grounds.

When the shooting happened, Atlanta Public Schools Police Chief Ronald Applin said officers were already on scene responding to a fight around 4 p.m. that day when shots were fired.

"Our officers were there, they immediately responded, treated the students who were wounded," Chief Applin said.

The four who were hurt were identified as three 17-year-olds and one 18-year-old, all males.

Mayor Andre Dickens previously said the incident left him "shocked and heartbroken."

"I feel sorry for the young people that have been impacted by this," Mayor Dickens, an alum of the school, said. "We want to make sure this school doesn't have a black eye on it because of this issue."

Officials mentioned the injuries of the four students were not considered life-threatening. They were taken to Grady Hospital to be treated.

"This arrest was made due to the hard work and collaboration between the Atlanta Public Schools Police and Atlanta Police and its Fugitive Squad," the APS statement reads. "Both agencies will continue working together, with Atlanta Police Department taking the lead, as the investigation into the incident remains ongoing. "
