A 25-year-old man has learned his sentence after he was convicted in a deadly 2021 shooting following a dispute at a Lilburn apartment complex, the district attorney's office said.

Karre Rivers will spend the rest of his life in prison without the possibility for parole plus five years. The sentencing comes after a Gwinnett County jury found him guilty on malice murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

The deadly shooting happened on Jan. 17, 2021, at The Aurora @ Twenty Seven Hundred Apartments on Park Crossing Way.

District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson said the victim, 30-year-old O’Shane Scott, was about to leave the apartment with his girlfriend when Rivers arrived. Authorities said Scott and Rivers then went inside the apartment.

After Scott left, his girlfriend heard gunfire coming from her home. She then rushed to the apartment and ran past Rivers -- who had his hands in his pockets, according to a release.

The district attorney's office said that Scott's girlfriend found him shot multiple times, prompting her to call police. He soon died after the incident.

Authorities added that several other witnesses said they saw Rivers leaving the apartment. When he was arrested, Rivers told police that someone else shot him, and he found Scott bleeding. He later confessed and said the two exchanged words, leading to a scuffle.

Rivers then told police that after seeing Scott's gun, he shot him with his own weapon and disposed of his gun in another state, according to the district attorney's release.
