ATLANTA — Rapper Lil Durk is in police custody after announcing to fans that he will turn himself into police on charges connected to a shooting outside The Varsity in February.
Atlanta Police confirmed it secured warrants for Chicago rapper Lil Durk, AKA Durk Banks. He is charged with criminal attempt to commit murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and participation in criminal gang activity.
Banks turned himself over to authorities at the Fulton County Jail around 8 p.m., Thursday.
The shooting happened on Feb. 5 around 5:50 a.m. after an altercation in The Varsity parking lot, according to police. Witnesses described seeing the victim in a verbal fight with the shooting suspect before gunshots rang out.
The victim, who has not been identified, was able to run a short distance away to One Cigar Lounge for help. He was taken to Atlanta Medical Center in critical condition and underwent surgery, according to Atlanta Police.
Police recovered 13 rifle and pistol casings from the scene and recovered a 9mm gun. There was blood throughout the crime scene and a vehicle in The Varsity parking lot was sprayed with bullets and had a shattered front passenger side window and a flat tire.
Police analyzed surveillance video, which showed the victim running from The Varsity, possibly dropping a firearm on his way to the cigar lounge.
Banks, 27, hails from Chicago and has been an active member of the rap industry since 2011, formerly as part of Def Jam Records and most recently Alamo Records. His last run-in with police was in 2013 in Chicago when police discovered that he possessed a firearm. He was later charged with unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.
