15 malnourished horses found in Dacula

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Fifteen horses were discovered in what authorities are describing as an "extremely malnourished" condition in Dacula, according to a spokesperson with Gwinnett County Animal Welfare and Enforcement on Tuesday.

The animals are now being signed over to Gwinnett County as officials work to ensure their safety and recovery.

Seven of the horses have already found foster care, and that number is expected to rise. However, if not all of the horses secure sponsors, Gwinnett County Animal Services is preparing to build a temporary shelter at Gwinnett Animal Welfare.

The Gwinnett County Police Department has also confirmed that a 68-year-old woman has been taken into custody in connection with the case. The woman, whose exact charges have not been released, was booked on Tuesday, Aug. 20. She is currently held without bond.

Cheryl Flanagan, owner of the nonprofit Save the Horses, shared photos of horses Tuesday evening following the arrest. Several others have reached out to 11Alive, stating that animal services have been to the home many times for the same or similar complaints, but the department has not confirmed that.

11Alive has reached out for more information.
