LUMPKIN COUNTY, Ga. — A man was shot and injured by deputies in Lumpkin County over the weekend, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

The incident happened on Saturday, September 28, shortly after noon. The GBI says deputies with the Lumpkin County Sheriff's Office responded to a domestic dispute at a home in the Cavender Creek area.

Deputies specified that they had information indicating a woman was injured in the incident.

Once there, the deputies encountered 27-year-old Malachi Mayfield, who was armed with a knife and made "aggressive movements towards the deputies," according to the GBI.

It was at that moment that Mayfield was shot. He was treated at the scene and eventually taken to a local hospital, according to the GBI, who said he is in stable condition.

The GBI is continuing to investigate the situation.
