Man held people at gunpoint in Gainesville dermatology clinic shooting

Investigators identify 62-year-old Dahlonega man killed in officer-involved shooting.

ATLANTA — There's new information in a dermatology clinic shooting on Monday that left one man dead.  

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the man involved in the shooting at Lanier Dermatology on South Enota was holding hostages at gunpoint. 

Investigators have identified the man as 62-year-old Rodney Hamilton of Dahlonega, Ga.

Gainesville officers responded around 11 a.m. to a 911 call about a gunman at the business, Gainesville Police said in a Facebook post. 

When officers got there, they were met with what was described as a "hostage-type" situation, according to Gainesville Police Sgt. Kevin Hollbrook.

Holbrook said Hamilton allegedly brandished a weapon, after which officers fired multiple shots. He was struck "multiple times," according to Gainesville Police.

Hamilton was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center where was pronounced dead. 

No other injuries were reported.
