Man runs off roadway, crashes onto I-75, flees as car catches fire in alleged DUI, police say

The wreck happened early Thursday morning in Atlanta.

An alleged DUI driver ran off the roadway and landed on I-75 before his car caught fire and he fled from the scene in a wreck that shut the I-75/85 northbound connector early Thursday morning.

It began as a chase down the Buford Spring Connector, police said, after a trooper flagged the driver – identified as 28-year-old Colin Burnett - going 63 mph on Piedmont Road.

Burnett slowed to indicate he would stop for the trooper and then took off onto the Buford Spring Connector. During the chase he ran off the roadway over a barrier and flipped onto I-75 North.

“The vehicle caught fire and the driver ran on foot,” a police release said.

They said Burnett was the only person seen running from the wreck. He was shortly apprehended in the wood line near I-75.

Burnett had non-life-threatening injuries, police said, and was taken to Grady Hospital/Detention.

He’s been charged with DUI, fleeing, speeding, and driving with a suspended license.
