CANTON, Ga. — A Cherokee County man has been sentenced to prison for dog fighting and animal cruelty.
A judge sentenced 59-year-old Randall Thaxton to 20 years in prison, with the first five years to be served behind bars.
Authorities took photos while they were conducting a welfare check in Canton. Officials said they found evidence of dog fighting outside and inside the home.
Thaxton was charged with nine counts of dog fighting and seven counts of animal cruelty.
The Cherokee County District Attorney said this is a clear message the county will not accept or condone inhumane treatment of animals.
