ATLANTA — A 39-year-old man was shot and killed on Wednesday afternoon after Atlanta Police said he tried to stop several suspects from breaking into cars.
Atlanta Police was called out to the 900 block of Coleman Street SW in the city's Pittsburgh neighborhood around 2 p.m. after reports of a person shot. When officers responded, they found a man who had been shot several times. He was rushed to Grady Hospital, where he died, Homicide Commander Lt. Andrew Smith said.
In a press conference, Smith said that several suspects were attempting to break into cars along Coleman Street when the victim confronted them and tried to intervene. That's when police said that the victim was shot. Smith said the victim had a weapon on him, but couldn't pull it out in time to defend himself.
Smith said they have spoken to witnesses in the area. At this time, they do not believe the suspects were breaking into the victim's car. However, they did say he lived in the area.
