Man shot by Coweta County deputies after barricading himself during family dispute

When they arrived, a man barricaded himself in a bedroom and threatened to shoot the officers if they approached.

COWETA COUNTY, Ga. — A man is in the hospital after being shot by Coweta County deputies during a family dispute late Thursday night.

According to the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to a home on Hawthorne Drive just before midnight on Sept. 19 following reports of a domestic dispute. When they arrived, a man barricaded himself in a bedroom and threatened to shoot the officers if they approached.

Deputies attempted to enter the room, but the man, officials said, "advanced toward them with a weapon in hand." Deputies opened fire, striking the man.

The deputies immediately provided medical aid at the scene, and Coweta County Fire Rescue and EMS arrived shortly afterward. The man was taken to an Atlanta-area hospital, though his current condition is unknown.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has been called in to investigate the shooting. All further updates will come from the GBI.

No deputies were injured in the incident.
