Man who shot at police as he crashed into Lake Lanier killed himself, GBI says

Gwinnett County Police chased John Monahan, Jr., through Shoal Creek Park and into the lake following a hit-and-run and carjacking last month.

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has released the cause of death of the man who shot at police as he crashed into Lake Lanier at the end of a chase last month.

On Monday, the GBI said that 26-year-old John Monahan, Jr., shot himself after a hit-and-run, carjacking and police chase.

Gwinnett County Police said the chase with officers ended at Shoal Creek Park in February.

Andy Adams said he was driving on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard on his way to North Carolina when he saw a car blow by him hitting other cars.

"He came past us well over 100 miles per hour," Adams said.

But the suspect didn't leave the vehicle empty-handed according to investigators. He came out with a rifle in-hand and was allegedly opening fire at the officers who were following.

He managed to steal another car and lead police on a chase once more.

That's when Monahan drove into Lake Lanier, and opened fire on officers as his car was sinking into the water. And police returned fire. Divers soon found Monahan's body in the water.
