DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — DeKalb Police initiated a SWAT response and are looking for a suspect early Friday morning after he allegedly shot at officers.
The DeKalb SWAT team is currently on scene aiding in the search.
The officers were called around 11:30 last night to a residence near Lithonia High School, according to a DeKalb Police Twitter post. Shots had been reported in the area.
When they arrived they said they found a person matching a description from the call in a driveway and, when the individual noticed a police cruiser coming his way, started shooting at them.
The officers said they returned fire, put the cruiser in reverse and backed away from the immediate scene. The cruiser was hit by the gunfire, but the officers were not harmed.
One of the officers was described as a "training officer."
The suspect then fled, according to DeKalb Police. They're currently searching for him, they said, and people who live in the immediate area have been evacuated from their homes.
"DKPD is currently working to identify and locate the suspect," a department tweet said. "If you have any info, please call our Homicide/Assault Unit at 770-724-7850."
