New DNA technology leads to indictment of cold case murder suspect

Sixty-one-year-old Jerry Lee has been charged with the 1997 murder of a 28-year-old South Fulton County woman.

ATLANTA — A Fulton County grand jury has indicted 61-year-old Jerry Lee for the 1997 murder of 28-year-old Lorrie Ann Smith.

According to Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard, Lee shot Smith in the back while burglarizing her South Fulton County home on Stonewall Tell Road on May 25, 1997.

A significant amount of the suspect's blood was found at the scene, but the killer was not able to be identified without modern DNA testing methods and technology.

Recently, using a new form of DNA technology, investigators were able to determine that the blood at the scene belonged to a member of Lee's family.

After obtaining a DNA sample from Lee, they were able to match his blood to the blood at the 1997 crime scene.

Lee was arrested in Alabama and extradited to Georgia, where he now faces six counts, including murder, felony murder, armed robbery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, burglary, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
