NEW ORLEANS — A woman was killed and 11 people were injured in a mass shooting Sunday in the Warehouse District.
Five men and six women were among the people wounded by the gunfire. Late Monday afternoon, the NOPD said that the other 11 victims were either "stable" or had been released from the hospital.
It happened in the 800 block of South Peters Street at about 11:56 p.m. on Sunday outside of Republic NOLA, a popular music club in the Central Business District of New Orleans.
Several witnesses described the scene to WWL Louisiana as chaos. A parked car near the Republic NOLA nightclub could be seen with bullet holes in it.
A witness who was at a nearby hotel told NOLA.com that she was awakened by the gunfire, that she initially mistook for fireworks.
"I saw people pouring out of the club," said Kelsey Holt of Nashville. "I feel awful for everyone."
WWL Louisiana obtained security camera video (seen below) from the Red Eye Grill showing people fleeing down the sidewalk away from the shooting.
The NOPD said officers responded to the shooting and when they arrived, they found one victim fatally shot lying on the sidewalk and other victims also with gunshot wounds.
EMS arrived on the scene and transported the victims to a local hospital while other victims from the shooting arrived at the hospital by private vehicle.
A man who works nearby told NOLA.com that it is at least the third shooting in two years to happen in that block.
Another witness to the shooting, who did not want to be identified, told WWL Louisiana’s Leigha McNeil, “We were block away, walking up right after it happened. So, by the grace of God, me and my friend stopped at the hotel to fix hair, you know, girls doing girls things. And right after when we walked up, we unfortunately saw someone on the ground and a couple of other people running around screaming, it was very chaotic and very traumatic for a lot of people. I just pray that everyone is okay and safe."
"It's very hard especially as a female because I see that a lot of females are paying for or are being becoming collateral damage for these senseless acts. And as a female who likes to have fun and who likes to enjoy the city, I love my city, it's hard for us to go out and enjoy anything without having to worry about losing our life,” the witnesses said.
Governor Jeff Landry who speaks of bringing change to New Orleans to help combat crime, shared his thoughts about Sunday's mass shooting in a social media post.
"Sharon and I are praying for the victims and their families in this tragedy. We appreciate the first responders for their hard work. This type of violence has no place in our State," Governor Landry said.
U.S. Rep. Troy Carter also spoke on the tragedy.
"Last night's mass shooting in New Orleans is a tragedy. It is heartbreaking to see gun violence devastate our city, our neighbors, and our loved ones. My prayers are with the victims and their loved ones. We urgently need common-sense gun reform measures and violence reduction programs in our community; too many lives have been lost. I will not stop fighting for change so that we can feel safe in the city we love," said U.S. Rep. Carter.
