ATLANTA — One person is dead and another is injured after a shooting in Atlanta on Sunday afternoon, Atlanta Police said.
According to APD, officers responded to a report of a person shot shortly after 3:30 p.m. on Baker Drive Southwest. This is in Atlanta's Glenrose Heights neighborhood.
When they arrived, officers found two people with gunshot wounds. One was a woman who was pronounced dead at the scene, and another was a man who was sent to the hospital. That person was "alert, conscious and breathing," according to police.
Atlanta Police Department homicide commander Andrew Smith explained that what led up to the dispute is complicated.
Smith said it started with an altercation between someone described as the deceased woman's boyfriend, someone else and her early Sunday.
Later in the day, the alleged boyfriend and the woman visited a home on Baker Drive. It's currently unclear why.
Next, people connected to the person involved in the earlier altercation showed up, looking for the alleged boyfriend. That's when the shooting begins, police said.
"There was an altercation between those two males that resulted in gunfire, where the homeowner gets struck and the decedent," Smith said.
Smith said the homeowner was not involved in the issue. He was shot on his porch. He's recovering at the hospital.
Smith said the woman who died wasn't the intended target either.
Investigators are questioning the alleged boyfriend.
The family told 11Alive off-camera that they were disturbed by how long the body sat outside after the shooting. It was more than three hours in the sweltering heat. One family member passed out. First responders showed up later to render aid.
The family was also confused as to why the body wasn't covered.
"It's a crime scene. And the body is a part of a crime scene," Smith said. "You never place evidence into a crime scene. So, that's why she wasn't covered."
Smith added that the wait had to do with the response time of the medical examiner.
"The Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office has jurisdiction over the body," Smith said. "We give them a call. And they respond."
Smith had this to say to the family in shambles, in the heat, mystified, all afternoon.
"We will ensure that justice is served," Smith said.
The family was not ready to speak on camera at this time. The alleged boyfriend also has not been named as a suspect yet.
There is currently no word on the identities of the female victim, the homeowner, or the alleged boyfriend.
