COBB COUNTY, Ga. — A man was shot dead by police inside a Cobb County Walgreens, according to police.
It happened Friday night. Police said around 11:27 p.m.; officers saw 32-year-old Nathan Jenkins inside a Walgreens on 2670 Cobb Parkway SE in Smyrna. Jenkins, according to police, had outstanding warrants.
Reports from authorities said officers got into an altercation with Jenkins, who they said was armed with a gun.
An officer shot him, and Jenkins was taken to Kennestone Hospital, where he later died. Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) was asked to complete an investigation.
11Alive spoke with a woman who said she was actually on the phone with Jenkins when this all happened.
"I was on the phone with him. He FaceTimed me. He put me in his pocket," Hayley Glaze said. "Basically, the police had him cornered. They were yelling at him. He was yelling back my hands are up.”
Glaze said the man police shot was her friend and that he should still be here.
“This is uncalled for, especially if his hands were up. He stated his hands were up, and y'all still shot him," Glaze said. "There’s no way he could’ve reached for anything. He’s not like that. He’s not dumb.”
Glaze shared a picture of her friend who was killed.
Customers like Tess Aubrey found out today their neighborhood drug store isn’t open because of the shooting.
“That’s definitely a controversial topic," Aubrey said. "It's crazy that it's happening this close to home."
No other details about the incident were released, including why Jenkins was wanted.
