ATLANTA — A man is dead, and another is hurt following a shooting near the Georgia State University campus on Friday morning, according to the Atlanta Police Department.
Officers were called around 1:10 a.m. to 92 Piedmont Ave NE, the address for the Piedmont Central Dining Hall. When police arrived, they said two men were shot and that one died.
Police said that the two were walking down the street, and at one point, one person asked another if he could purchase an illegal substance. During the exchange, they got into a fight with a third person, which led to gunfire. According to the police department, the people involved are not students at Georgia State.
Piedmont Avenue was blocked off from Auburn to John Wesley Dobbs Avenue during their investigation. One person is in custody, according to police.
No other information was released about the shooting.
The shooting is the latest incident in the area. In October, four people were shot near the dining hall, and another person was shot at a nearby RaceTrac gas station in April.
Georgia State Police Chief Anthony Coleman told 11Alive's Karys Belger he's been working to increase safety measures across the campus.
"That's one of the things that we promised the university, that we would have a presence around the end, around the RaceTrac, in the mix area. And we've done that with officers working overtime and also a part-time duty there," Coleman said.
Coleman also told 11Alive the two off-duty officers heard the shots and responded in addition to the Atlanta Police officers who were called to the scene.
In the spring, he's hoping to add more measures near the gas station and on other parts of the campus.
"We are working on and we're working on also adding additional lighting. We've done additional lighting already, but we are adding additional lighting and we're working with Georgia Power to add a smart camera system to our lighting," Coleman added.
