Suspect in custody after hours-long standoff in DeKalb County | What we know

The suspect was taken into custody without incident on Monday night, police said.

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A 28-year-old suspect is now in custody after a SWAT standoff at a DeKalb County home on Monday night, police said.

Authorities said he was charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer and added they found several firearms and thousands of rounds of ammunition inside the home.

It all started near the 900 block of Meadow Rock Drive, where authorities said a SWAT unit was responding to a barricaded person. Heavy police presence was seen in the area.

According to police, the incident began when DKPD was notified around 6:30 p.m. about an armed person experiencing a mental health crisis. When they arrived, officers heard what sounded like gunshots being fired from inside the residence.

Witnesses said they heard at least four shots.

"It was like pow, pow, pow, pow," one witness recalled to 11Alive's Cody Alcorn. "It was crazy."

A Mobile Crisis Unit Officer discovered a defect in his duty belt but was otherwise unharmed, police said. In addition, no shots were fired by the officers, and there were no reported injuries.

By  8:49 p.m., DeKalb County Police's SWAT command center rolled onto the scene.

11Alive crews also spotted additional tactical vehicles in the area.

DeKalb County Police had asked the public to stay clear of the area near the area that evening. However, officers had also said there was no threat to the community and that they contained the situation to one residence.

When SWAT prepared to enter the home, the 28-year-old suspect exited the building and was taken into custody without incident, police said.
