Powder Springs patrol officer T-boned after suspected carjacking prompts chase, manhunt underway

An armed 16-year-old and a 17-year-old are in custody, and one suspect is still on the run, according to Powder Springs Police.

POWDER SPRINGS, Ga. — A Powder Springs police officer was T-boned and a suspect is still on the run after an investigation for a carjacking turned into a chase, which prompted a manhunt on Tuesday afternoon, the Powder Springs Police Department said.

It all happened in Powder Springs around 3:30 p.m. when police responded to a FLOCK alert for a carjacked vehicle near Old Lost Mountain in the McEachern area. Police attempted to stop the car, but they drove away which prompted a heavy police presence. Powder Springs Police told 11Alive on Wednesday that the carjacking happened in Clayton County, but police got the alert for the car's location in Powder Springs. That's when police said they found the car and a short chase ensued on Tuesday.

An officer's car was then T-boned near Richard D Sailors and New Macland Rd as he attempted to respond to the pursuit.

Cobb County Police Department released Wednesday that the patrol car crashed into a Toyota 4Runner and then a 2019 Honda Odyssey. Authorities added that vehicles had "significant damage, but no significant injuries" were reported.

The chase continued until it ended further up the road when the suspects hit a dead end onto Rushing Wind Court. Law enforcement later added that the suspects left the road and hit the backside of someone's home with the car. The car then continued around the home until it got stuck in mud. That's when the three suspects began to run away. The suspects ran eastbound toward Old Lost Mountain near the wood line.

An armed 16-year-old and 17-year-old are currently in custody, and another suspect is still at large, according to Powder Springs Police.

Police initially responded to a subdivision with K-9 units where they were looking for the suspects. Later on Tuesday, police got a call from a concerned homeowner who believed she saw a suspicious person in her neighborhood. Authorities then responded to the location and arrested the second suspect. 11Alive obtained video from a homeowner's NEST camera that showed someone who they believed were suspicious in their neighborhood.

The other suspect's location and identity is still unknown as of Wednesday. Police have since recovered the carjacked vehicle and some weapons.

The teens face stolen vehicle, obstruction and traffic charges stemming from the chase. One of them is also facing gun possession charges.

Powder Springs Police took to Facebook shortly after the incident to announce street closures. "Richard D Sailors and New Macland Rd are shut down for an extended period of time," the post said. Police previously said that the eastbound lanes of both streets were shut down and they were rerouting those who are stuck in traffic. The roads appear to have since reopened after the crash was cleared.

Cobb County Police are also investigating the incident.

Police are currently asking anyone who sees anything suspicious to call 911.
