PUTNAM COUNTY, Ga. -- A Putnam County man has been arrested for shooting a sheriff's deputy several times during a standoff.

It began shortly before 8 p.m. Wednesday at a house in the 900 block of Crooked Creek Road in southern Putnam County.

Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills said the suspect, Donovan Ray Dann, was holding a young woman against her will inside the house. The woman's parents were the ones who called the police. Dann reportedly battered and assaulted the victim, who Sills described as Dann's girlfriend and babysitter.

When sheriff's deputies arrived on the scene, Dann opened fire with a 12-gauge gun. Deputy Barok Wood was hit in the face, hand and upper arm, and was taken to an Athens hospital in stable condition, according to Sills.

After shooting Wood, Dann ran into the nearby woods. He eventually came out and surrendered.

Dann is behind held in the Putnam County Jail on charges of aggravated assault on a peace officer, aggravated assault and cruelty to children.
