DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A Lyft driver was shot and killed over the weekend, DeKalb County Police said.
DKPD identified the driver as 31-year-old Rafeeq Badee, and a statement from Lyft indicated he was on the job when the shooting occurred.
Lyft, in a statement, called it a "terrible tragedy" and said the rider involved "has been permanently banned from the Lyft community."
Any further information about the rider was unclear, as police did not provide details on a possible suspect. DKPD said witnesses reported "multiple suspects running from the scene after the shooting."
It happened on the 1000 block of Woodberry Place on Saturday evening, with officers responding around 7:30 p.m. and finding Badee "lying in the parking lot with multiple gunshot wounds," DKPD said.
He was taken by EMS to a hospital but "later succumbed to his injuries."
Lyft's statement said the company's "hearts are with Mr. Badee's family and loved ones in the midst of this terrible tragedy."
"We have reached out to offer support to them during this difficult time, and stand ready to assist law enforcement with their investigation," Lyft said.
