HABERSHAM COUNTY, Ga. — A Georgia Department of Corrections officer was arrested this week on charges of sexually assaulting an inmate and is now out on bond, Habersham County said Friday.

A release from the county said Russell Edwin Clark, of Alto, was accused of "improperly touching and kissing a female inmate over whom he had disciplinary authority, willfully and knowingly violating his oath of office."

Clark is a lieutenant at Lee Arrendale State Prison in Habersham County.

The county release said the incident occurred in a stairwell at the prison's main dormitories. Clark was booked early Thursday at the Habersham County Detention Center and released on bond.

His charges include sexual assault on a person in custody and violation of oath by a public officer.
