SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — A search is underway in Sandy Springs after a suspect led police on a chase from north Georgia into the Atlanta suburb, ending in a crash.

The Sandy Springs Police Department said the suspect is still at large after the chase, which ended at Northside Drive & Mount Vernon Highway. Police said the area where Northside and Mount Vernon converge is closed, as well as parts of nearby Powers Ferry.

According to Georgia State Patrol, the chase began in Whitfield County and traveled down I-75, where Bartow County sheriff's deputies took chase toward Cobb County.

Cobb Police officers then took up the chase, but the pursuit "was terminated after contact was lost as the pursuit crossed into Sandy Springs on I-285 east."

It ended with the suspect crashing into a power pole, after being found behind a business by Sandy Springs Police, GSP said. The suspect fled on foot and "evaded capture" as a K-9 was brought in.

According to GSP, troopers up in Whitfield County had been tipped off to a vehicle that'd been stolen from an airport in Kentucky while the owner was out of state.

"Local authorities in Kentucky are in the process of completing the stolen vehicle report," GSP said. "The investigation into the identity of the driver is on-going."
