SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — A homeowner in Sandy Springs shot and killed a home invasion suspect, police said, in an incident they characterized as the homeowner utilizing his Second Amendment rights for home defense.

A release from the Sandy Springs Police Department stated "an unknown male unlawfully entered a residence on Spalding Drive and threatened to harm the homeowner."

Someone else in the home called 911 as the situation unfolded a little after 2 a.m. Sunday morning.

As officers were en route, the homeowner "exercising his Second Amendment right to bear arms, defended himself and his family from bodily harm by shooting the suspect," the Sandy Springs department said.

Officers found the suspect dead when they arrived on scene.

"SSPD detectives responded and are continuing their investigation," the release said. "At this time, it is believed that this is an isolated incident."

The department did not indicate if the homeowner was considered justified or if there might possibly be charges in the incident.
