NEWTON COUNTY, Ga. — A second person has been arrested for allegedly aiding a Newton County inmate in escaping custody while at a hospital earlier this month, the sheriff's office said.

According to the sheriff's office, a 30-year-old man from Garden City was apprehended on Sunday and is accused of aiding Kendrick Hurst during an escape from custody on May 4. The man faces charges of aiding or allowing another to escape lawful custody.

The sheriff's office said the first arrest in connection with this case was a 49-year-old man from Oxford. That person was apprehended on May 7.

"The Newton County Sheriff’s Office will not leave any stone unturned during this ongoing investigation,” Sheriff Ezell Brown said. “Any individual who aided Kendrick Hurst — whether it was feeding him, providing monetary funds, phone calls, providing clothing, and offering transportation — will be arrested and charged.”

On Friday, Newton County deputies said Hurst was apprehended in Wake County, North Carolina. He is now facing several additional charges related to his escape.

Hurst was previously arrested on April 28 and charged with terroristic threats and acts, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, willful obstruction of law enforcement officers, and a number of traffic violations.

Authorities said more information regarding Hurst's capture will be released "at a later date" to thank and recognize all of the agencies who helped.
