SPALDING COUNTY, Ga. — A woman has been sentenced for malice murder in connection to a deadly shooting that stemmed from a lover's quarrel.
The deadly shooting happened on July 3, 2023, on Dobbins Mill Road in Spalding County. When deputies arrived, they found a man dead in the road. Investigators used the man's fingerprints to identify him as Johnathan Gilbert.
A Spalding County Sheriff's Office investigation revealed that three suspects targeted Gilbert's residence and vandalized it with eggs. When Gilbert confronted them, deputies said they ran to their vehicle.
The sheriff's office previously said one of the suspects, Sydney Maughon, a backseat passenger, pulled a gun and shot Gilbert multiple times.
According to records from the Spalding County Superior Court, Maughon negotiated a plea and was found guilty of malice murder-- life with the possibility of parole.
In addition to Maughon, two other suspects also face charges in connection to Gilbert's death.
Spalding County Superior Court records show another woman was found guilty of criminal trespass and simple battery and sentenced to 24 months behind bars.
Additionally, a third suspect, Jeremy Munson, is set to have a trial before a jury in March 2025. He faces charges including murder, malice murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, battery and criminal trespass.
