Man shot by deputies outside Gwinnett County Jail after he began shooting at them: Sheriff

According to the county sheriff's office, the situation is under control and "there is no ongoing threat to the public's safety."

ATLANTA — An investigation is underway after the sheriff's office said a man fired at deputies outside of the Gwinnett County Jail on Monday.  According to the sheriff's office, the situation is under control and "there is no ongoing threat to the public's safety."

The sheriff's office said the man arrived at the Gwinnett County Jail and confronted deputies. 

"The individual continued to demonstrate unusual behavior when exiting our building," Gwinnett County Sheriff Keybo Taylor said at a news conference Monday evening. "The individual returned to his vehicle, retrieved a firearm and at some point began firing on our deputies." 

The man was taken to the hospital for medical treatment, according to the sheriff's office. No deputies were hurt during the incident.

The sheriff's office previously said that the jail is not accepting new intakes and that all traffic approaching the building will be redirected. 

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is working to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting involving deputies.
