Man fights for his life at hospital after shooting near Lake Allatoona on Father's Day: Authorities

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. — A 39-year-old man is fighting for his life after a shooting at the Sweetwater Campground Day Use Area on Father's Day, according to Cherokee County deputies.

The shooting happened around 6 p.m. on Fields Chapel Road after an altercation happened between the 39-year-old victim and a 42-year-old man. 

Deputies added that the two men did not know each other.

Witnesses told 911 dispatchers that a suspect had run away after the shooting, and they gave a description of the man's vehicle. 

A Cherokee County Sheriff's deputy saw a vehicle matching the description traveling west on Knox Bridge Highway towards Bartow County. The deputy stopped the driver and arrested him. 

The victim was shot three times and remains in critical condition at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital, according to authorities.

Deputies charged the 42-year-old suspect with aggravated assault, aggravated battery, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and commission of a crime.

Deputies said in a news release that the suspect is in custody at the Cherokee Adult Detention Center without bond.
